Lawrence Osborne (Born 1958) is a novelist, journalist and travel writer from the U.K. who is currently based in Bangkok. After being educated at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge and Harvard, he travelled widely, living in Italy, the United States, France, Poland, Morocco, Mexico, Thailand and Turkey. His articles have appeared in The New York Times MagazinePlayboyThe New YorkerCondé Nast TravelerNewsweek International and The Wall Street Journal Magazine, amongst others. He has authored six novels, such as The Forgiven, selected by The Economist as one of the Best Books of the Year for 2012, and Only to Sleep, a Philip Marlowe Novel which he was selected to write by the Raymond Chandler estate. He is also a well-regarded travel writer and has published a number of books about his journeys. His account about the relationship between Islam and alcohol, The Wet and the Dry, was included in the Top 10 Books of 2013 by The New York Times Book Review. He has been widely compared to his compatriot Graham Greene.
