Santa Maddalena Newsletter

After weeks of warm weather, autumn has settled in for good at Santa Maddalena; the fires are roaring, persimmons are dropping, and the dogs are curling up with writers such as Rajesh Parameswaran and Abigail Ulman. Fellow Maaza Mengiste (below) recently left for home, but we are glad of the arrival of David Young (right), who drove a truck of our olives to the local frantoio to be pressed!  We expect olives to make an appearance in everyone’s novel.

2017 books by Fellows–many written here at Santa Maddalena–included Elif Batuman‘s “The Idiot,” Andrew Sean Greer’s “Less,” Joshua Cohen‘s “Moving Kings,” Zachary Mason‘s “Void Star,” Teju Cole‘s “Blind Spot,” Colm Tóibín‘s “House of Names,” Kamila Shamsie‘s “Home Fire,” and John Banville‘s “Mrs. Osmond.”

We are proud of those who go on to win acclaim, and this year was a bumper crop, including Mary Gaitskill, Georgi Gospodinov, John Vaillant, and John Banville on the IMPAC Dublin longlist, Zadie Smith as finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award and longlist for the Man Booker Prize, and Spring 2017 Fellow Ece Tumelkuran, winner of the Edinburgh International Book Festival’s first book award.  Special congratulations to Hisham Matar, who this year won the PEN/Jean Stein Book Award, the Rathbones Folio Award, and…the Pulitzer Prize.

And a story to close:

Legend has it that a White Stag wanders the forests of Donnini. An albino, we feared he would be done in by hunters, but recently President Beatrice Monti and Executive Director Andrew Sean Greer together saw him in the twilight of the olive grove: surely a good omen.

We have no photographic evidence of this encounter, so instead we offer this gratuitous pug photo.
