Fall 2016: new fellows, new Executive Director

Autumn has come to Tuscany, and with it chestnuts, olives, persimmons and a host of wonderful writers here at Santa Maddalena.

In residence with us: Isabella Hammad (UK), Stefan Merrill Block (USA), Claire-Louise Bennett (UK) and Makenzy Orcel (Haiti). Dinner conversation has been, as always, a mix of French, English and Italian but always enlightening.

We are pleased to announce Andrew Sean Greer, many times a fellow here, as our new Executive Director of the Foundation. He will be working alongside Beatrice Monti della Corte to ensure the continuation of Santa Maddalena’s history of providing writers a place of solitude and beauty in which to write. He loves the dogs, and his Italian is improving.  He is shown here at the 2016 Festival degli Scrittori in Florence with Max Rabino.
And our saddest news is the loss, in October, of our dear friend Max. He has been an essential part of Santa Maddalena since its beginning. So many writers’ lives were touched by his views on art and literature, his wit, his sly smile, and his love of beauty.  It is difficult to state how deeply he is missed. Here you can see him in his last visit this summer.

But he has already left a wonderful legacy.  Thanks to a generous donation, the Max Rabino Fellowship for writing on the natural world has helped bring to Santa Maddalena such great writers as Wade Davis, Terry Tempest-Williams, John Vaillant, William Fiennes and Sylvain Tesson.  May his great joy for living and curiosity for new horizons continue through writers such as these, and through all of our brilliant fellows.
